…recording a different channel whilst watching recording another etc. However I am interested in the HDD in the unit without having to spend on a HDD DVD.
It will work, but you won’t be able to do any of the following:
*Watch one channel while recording another
*Record two channels at once
There are also a couple of other things to bear in mind when using a Sky+ box with just one cable feed:
1) When making timer recordings, I think you have to leave the box on standby at all times (i.e. you can’t be watching another channel when the timer recording is about to start), otherwise the recordings will fail.
2) When making timer recordings of programmes that run consecutively on different channels (i.e. programme 1 finishes on channel A just as programme 2 is about to start on channel B), the second recording may fail or you may lose a minute or so of recording either side.
(Note: by “timer recording” I mean a recording that you select from the Sky Guide to be recorded at a later time or date.)
Another thing that’s worth mentioning:

The HDD inside a Sky+ box is only capable of recording from the builti-in Sky tuners – you can’t hook up something to one of the SCART sockets and record from that. So it’s less versatile than a HDD DVD in that sense.
You need a second coax to be able to record two or watch one/record another.
